Art

My favorite part of being an artist is surprising myself by combining different media.

Illustrations from Song of Hope

Written by Joan Donaldson and Illustrated by pj lyons

When I was in school, one of my favorite options for completing assignments was to make a diorama. So when my plans for a 2-dimensional cut paper style illustration didn’t have the depth of field I wanted, I built a theater and created  dioramas—just like in the “old” days. It took a long  time, but it was lots of fun. I am happiest when making stuff.

In the first image on the left, I wove tiny paper baskets and fashioned mini vegetables to go in them.

For the top right image, I taped the falling papers to a piece of wire.

For the bottom left image, I built the bunk beds out of balsa wood, based on some images the author, Joan Donaldson, provided from an orphanage where she sponsored a child.

And in the bottom right scene, the book is suspended on fishing line.

This book is sadly now out of print.
